CradlePoint MBR1000 & CTR500 1.4.2 Firmware Release

CradlePoint has released firmware version 1.4.2 for the MBR1000 & CTR500 3G EVDO mobile routers. The new firmware adds compatibility for the Verizon Novatel USB760 and the Blackberry Storm 9530.

Also included in this release:

  • OpenDNS support on Sprint network. Sprint DNS servers intercept requests to other DNS services. This change provides a workaround to allow the use of the router's Advanced -> Web Filter -> OpenDNS content filtering functionality. If you have your own OpenDNS account settings, this will not make them work for you. That functionality is expected in our 1.5 release. This does not affect Verizon or AT&T networks.

    • Note that a defect exists with load balancing and using a Sprint modem along with a modem from a different carrier. Content may or may not be blocked depending on which modem the request is made through (Sprint with workaround vs. other carrier without workaround). If only Sprint modems are used for load balancing, this issue does not occur.

OpenDNS is a service that makes your Internet faster and more reliable, and keeps you safe from phishing Web sites trying to steal your personal information.

3G Broadband Coverage Comparison

Speed test comparisons are great if you have coverage. Without coverage, speed doesn’t matter. So, which carrier has the best 3G mobile broadband coverage; Sprint, Verizon or AT&T? Well, that really depends on where you’re going to use it. While all 3 carriers have excellent 3G broadband coverage in some of the larger cities such as New York and Chicago, the coverage isn’t as equitable for the rest of the country. Looking at the coverage maps on the web sites for Sprint, Verizon and AT&T it appears that AT&T has the smallest 3G broadband network. There doesn’t seem to be many areas that AT&T covers that aren’t also covered by Sprint and/or Verizon.

For people who are mobile and need to have Internet access in more than one geographic area, it’s important to choose a carrier with the best broadband coverage for those areas. For instance, if I live in Phoenix, AZ both Verizon and Sprint have excellent coverage, but if I also need Internet access in Kansas, Sprint is going to be my best choice. If I need Inernet access in Georgia, Verizon is the best choice. Now, just looking at the map isn’t the best way to find 3G mobile broadband coverage. Within any geographic area with coverage, there are pockets that either don’t have coverage or have poor coverage. The best way to find 3G mobile broadband coverage for your area is to look up your address on the coverage map. Try different carriers and see which one has the best coverage for the areas you need Internet access.

MoreMobileInternet.com has created a video review of the coverage maps for all 3 carriers. Verizon and Sprint coverage maps are available on MoreMobileInternet.com or you can always call us at 866.541.0400 and we’ll help you choose the carrier with the best 3G mobile broadband coverage for your needs.

Sprint Announces 3G/4G USB Broadband Device

In an effort to be the 4G leader, Sprint's first dual-mode 3G/4G device will be available this month. Customers will be able to use both the 3G and 4G networks.

Sprint Extends 4G Leadership with Nation's First 3G/4G Dual-Mode Mobile Broadband Service The ultimate wireless broadband device delivers both 3G and 4G, revolutionizing mobile broadband and giving customers the best of both worlds

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 2008--Sprint (NYSE: S) is about to make wireless history again by bringing the mobile broadband future to its customers now. The 4G leader announced it will make the first 3G/4G dual-mode device, which operates on both the Sprint 3G and 4G networks, available in retail stores Dec. 21.

The Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem U300 delivers the power of the Now Network(TM), the nation's largest and most dependable mobile broadband 3G network*, while also harnessing the turbocharged speeds of WiMAX on the new Sprint 4G network. Sprint launched 4G in Baltimore in September and plans to launch in other markets across the country throughout 2009. This versatile device will enable customers to experience blazing fast Internet access, greater productivity and enhanced multimedia quality throughout 4G markets, and offer access to the dependable Sprint 3G network virtually everywhere else. The 3G/4G USB modem represents another major development in truly un-tethered broadband access.

"Sprint intends to be the leader in 4G and bring the wireless Internet to life," said Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO. "This first-of-its-kind device allows our customers to take the Internet with them essentially wherever they go by gaining enhanced speed and capability in 4G markets and the nationwide coverage of our 3G network across the rest of the country."

Sprint 4G represents a shift in the way people will use mobile broadband. Businesses, consumers and governments will be able to extend their Internet experience beyond home or office use. For the business customer, a typical user experience might be the ability to participate in a video conference from anywhere within the coverage area in a Sprint 4G city while sharing and retrieving large data files in just seconds. For consumers, it might be the ability to download a song in several seconds or a movie in significantly less than an hour while in the park or moving through the city, three to five times faster than 3G networks. The Sprint 3G/4G USB modem will access mobile multimedia applications at average downlink speeds of 2-4 Mbps within Baltimore Sprint 4G service areas. Where Sprint 4G service has yet to launch, the dual-mode device will operate on the Nationwide Sprint Mobile Broadband 3G Network at average downlink speeds of 600 Kbps - 1.4 Mbps.

The Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem U300, manufactured by Franklin Wireless, is a sleek, easy-to-use data card which connects to a standard USB port. The device is priced at $149.99 with a two-year subscriber agreement, after a $50 mail-in-rebate. Beginning Dec. 21, customers can purchase the USB data card via the Sprint direct business sales force, at most Baltimore-area Sprint stores and at select Baltimore-area retailers. Starting in January, the device will also be available in Baltimore-area Best Buy stores. With the Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem, customers living in and traveling to Baltimore will be able to work even faster while on-the-go. For $79.99 - just a $20 premium on any mobile broadband connection plan - customers will have simple-to-use access to the best possible mobile broadband connection: 3G or 4G. The Sprint Connection Manager recognizes and connects to the fastest connection available.

"The availability of this first dual-mode mobile broadband device further demonstrates Sprint's leadership in 3G and 4G services," said Todd Rowley, vice president of Sprint 4G. "Our future device portfolio of single-mode 4G devices, embedded 4G laptops and dual- mode 3G/4G devices will continue to demonstrate our commitment to WiMAX."

Sprint is the first and only national wireless carrier to offer customers its 4G network and 3G network on one device. As 4G service continues to roll out in other cities, Sprint customers with dual-mode devices will be ready to take advantage of its super-fast speeds and will ultimately experience new forms of interactive communications, high- speed mobile Internet browsing, social-networking tools, local and location-centric products and services and city-wide broadband access to multimedia services including music, video, mobile TV and on-demand products.

Wireless Broadband Internet From Verizon For 12 New Sites in Lewis County.

Verizon Wireless announced it has introduced BroadbandAccess, its wireless broadband service, expanding its coverage in Lewis County, NY, giving local customers access to the latest high-speed business and entertainment services on their wireless phones, laptop and desktop computers, and PDAs.

Verizon said that customers living in and visiting the area can now access their e-mail, corporate data, the Internet and more at broadband speeds -- in their homes or on the road. They can also view and download video clips on their phones, download music onto their handsets over-the-air, play 3D games, and send large data files at faster speeds as the company continues to expand the next generation of its high-speed wireless broadband network across Upstate New York.

The company has added CDMA 1x Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) technology to 12 cell sites in the following areas:
Lewis County:
- Denmark - Croghan - Lyonsdale - Pinckney - Diana - Leyden - Harrisburg - Martinsburg - Lowville - Turin - New Bremen - Greig

"Verizon Wireless is focused on providing the best customer experience, and a major part of that commitment is making sure we continue to have the best, most reliable network," said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless' Upstate New York region. "Instead of merely offering wireless broadband service in metropolitan areas or near major airports, we're committed to giving our customers the ability to access the Internet, corporate data and premium entertainment content at broadband speeds throughout Upstate New York."

Verizon Wireless' wireless broadband network now stretches across Western, Central and Eastern New York from Lake Erie to the Hudson River Valley, including the cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica/Rome, Albany, Jamestown, Elmira/Corning, Ithaca, Binghamton, Watertown, Canton/Potsdam, Glens Falls, Poughkeepsie and into the New York City area, as well as hundreds of towns and villages across the state.

The entire Upstate New York EV-DO network is now Rev. A capable, meaning customers can enjoy even faster speeds than before when both downloading and sending large files on the company's broadband data network.

Verizon Wireless continued to expand its Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) third generation (3G) wide-area network Revision A (Rev. A). In addition to the new cell sites listed, the company’s high speed technology was enhanced in towns and areas of Waynesboro, Swainsboro, Louisville, Sylvania, Griffin, Wrens, Millen, Metter, Gwinnett County, Warner Robins, Woodstock, Savannah, Rome, Fort Gordon, Jackson, Augusta, Thomson, Willacoochee, Bristol, Statesboro, Americus, Thomasville, Bainbridge, Cordele, Douglas, Americus, Thomaston and Perry. Additional capacity was also added at the Georgia Dome and Georgia World Congress Center facilities in Atlanta and at the University of Georgia’s football stadium in Athens.

With the enhanced network, Georgians have even more ubiquitous access to Verizon Wireless’ two prime services: BroadbandAccess and V CAST. With BroadbandAccess, customers can download a one Megabyte e-mail attachment – the equivalent of a small PowerPoint® presentation or a large PDF file – in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds. The company’s V CAST multimedia services offer customers the ability to download full song tracks, play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to their phones.

“We’ve always believed that even the most advanced wireless device is only as good as the network it runs on which is why we have consistently invested in our network over the years,” said Jeff Mango, President Verizon Wireless Georgia/Alabama Region. “We will continue to invest right here in Georgia to ensure that our customers have the absolute best wireless experience here at home and across the country.”

The company’s continued investment in Georgia is part of Verizon Wireless’ ongoing effort to expand coverage, improve capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network throughout the country. Verizon Wireless has invested more than $40 billion – $5 billion on average every year – since the company was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. Other examples of company leadership include being first to offer nationwide plans with unlimited calling and the only provider to offer a 30-day network Test Drive pledge that pays for calls if a customer isn’t satisfied and switches to another carrier.

Verizon Wireless Expands 3G Network in South Boston
Investing to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Voice, Multimedia and Internet Access
SOUTH BOSTON, MA — In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Suffolk County, Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site. The new site increases wireless voice and data coverage and capacity along East Broadway and L Street in South Boston, Mass., as well as the surrounding area.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $48 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. Regionally the company has invested over $2.2 billion into its New England network, including over $100 million during the first six months of 2008. As the wireless carrier with America's largest 3G network, every Verizon Wireless cell site in New England provides wireless broadband connectivity.

“We’ve always believed that even the most advanced cell phone is only as good as the network it runs on,” said Richard Enright, director for network systems performance for Verizon Wireless. “We continue to aggressively invest into our wireless networks across New England to increase coverage and capacity for our customers.”
BroadbandAccess offers computer users the nation's most reliable high-speed wireless mobile broadband network, operating at average upload speeds between 500 and 800 kilobits per second (kbps), and download speeds between 600 kbps and 1.4 megabits per second over Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess with Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) network. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones.

The company’s “nation’s most reliable wireless network” reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. Nationally, these test men and women drive 90 specially equipped vehicles almost 1 million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3 million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

Novatel MiFi Creates 3G Portable Hotspot
Novatel Wireless Inc. announced today that they have created an unprecedented line of Intelligent Mobile Hotspots. MiFi represents the industry's first Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, a new category of mobile broadband that lets users put their world of content, services and connectivity in their pocket. Featuring an internal battery providing over forty hours standby and up to four hours of active use on a single charge, the MiFi product line enables users to access high-speed Internet from anywhere there is a cellular connection, including moving vehicles where multiple passengers may need Internet access.

Instead of needing a router and separate Internet source, Novatel has combined them into a single device about the size of a deck of cards. The MiFi product line will offer enterprises, SMB and SOHO users a unique solution to secure, control and manage wireless connections. Certain MiFi configurations support applications such as auto VPN, automatic syncing of email and optional remote management capabilities for the enterprise IT manager. MiFi offers a robust platform capable of hosting third party applications that extend the reach and control of the enterprise when dealing with remote mobile assets.

According to Novatel, MiFi is the easiest to use broadband device ever. Users are one-click away from their personalized content and services, with no need for installing host applications or hardware drivers as part of the installation process. The Internet connection can be easily shared between multiple users and Wi-Fi devices such as laptops, cameras, gaming devices and multimedia players. The MiFi products serve as an intelligent, open platform capable of hosting advanced software applications and flexible enough to address the continued evolution of mobile broadband.

The MiFi line of products should be available during the first quarter of 2009 and sources estimate the price will be just under $200 before any discounts offered by carriers such as Sprint and Verizon. This is great news for people who need to share their Internet connection. However, if you only need Internet for one computer, a mobile broadband card is still your best option.

New Smaller Verizon USB760 now available for just $49.99 at More Mobile Internet.

This is the latest Novatel USB card for Verizon. It is slightly shorter than the previous USB727 and offers an 8GB memory slot vs. the 4GB slot our Free USB727 had. IF the size difference is a big deal for you, and you don't need to use it with a Mobile Router, then the USB760 is a good choice. However, since the size difference is not that great, and the card has the same speed as the older device we don't really see a huge advantage to the newer device. Especially since the USB760 does not work with any of the mobile routers...yet. Either way, More Mobile Internet saves you $50 over the Verizon price, and offers even better deals with the purchase of a Mobile Router.
