4G Showdown - Verizon UML290 vs. Sprint 250U

Here is a video throw down between the Verizon UML290 and the Sprint 250U. Each card has some advantages. Verizon is $10 a month less, but it also has a 5GB limit. The good news is the overage is just $10 per GB now. Sprint is Unlimited in 4G areas, and is $59.99 a month. If you are a mega power user then Sprint is a great choice as long as you are in a 4G area. That said, for most people who are normal users, Verizon will be a better choice. That's my opinion. But watch the video - that's where it all goes down. Which one do YOU think is better and why?

It is 4G capable, but then again, there are almost zero reasons to get anything other than a 4G capable device. If you haven't heard about the new Firefox extension called Firesheep that Eric Butler built then be very afraid to use public wifi. Read my blog post about Protecting yourself from Firesheep.

The short version is to not try and kill Firesheep, but rather just avoid the issue altogether. How is this best done? By using Sprint Mobile Broadband or a Verizon Mobile HotSpot this allows you to completely avoid those so called free Wifi hotspots. "Free" suddenly isn't so free when you are risking your computer getting taken over by anyone who downloads a free extension off of the Internet. Is this a shameless plug for the technology we sell? Of course it is! But that doesn't change the fact that open access WiFi is scary stuff indeed.

Surpriiiiiise! There’s no sign if Sprint’s just testing things or if they’ve just been caught in the act before they got a chance to send out a press release, but reports are coming in that Sprint’s 4G network has just gone live in San Francisco.

Our eagle-eyed buddy Marin of IntoMobile noticed the network’s new-found SF presence this morning, when his Sprint Overdrive suddenly lived up to its name. Download speeds jumped from the standard megabit-or-so per second up to anywhere from 3 to 9 megabits per second.

Now, before you get too excited: this doesn’t appear to cover all of San Francisco right now — skyscrapers and hills make coverage difficult, you know? However, Marin says he’s seeing the 4G juices flow in live around Embarcadero, SoMa, and the Financial District.

Got a 4G device, like the EVO, Epic 4G, or Overdrive and live in San Francisco? Give it a quick reboot, and let us know how things go.

I live in the country and can't get cable or dsl, I've been stuck with dialup for years. I've looked at all possible choices..it's either hughes net, wild blue or Mobile broadband through verizon. Honestly I hate all these options b/c they are both outrageously expensive and they both have limits on usage (5gigs a month). Which one should I get, they are all about $60 a month.

First of all make sure Verizon has you covered with 3G coverage (it will show Blue on the map, see YouTube video below) If they don't have 3G then don't even bother with Verizon, you will need to go with one of the Satellite companies. Same goes with Virgin, which is cheaper, but they have a lot less 3G than does Verizon. It doesn't matter if Virgin is a better deal if it does not work in your area. IF Verizon (or Virgin) does have you covered then I would try that since it's a lot less equipment and expense to get started. As far as the limits, you can easily log on to your Verizon account and check usage.

As we speak right now though, both Sprint and T-Mobile have faster networks although these 4G networks cover much less area. I can' t believe AT&T still gets away with saying they have the "Fastest Mobile Broadband Network" What a complete lie! Not that AT&T corners the market on un-truths from the carriers, but that is so clearly wrong.

All 3 work equally well Internationally. The main difference is how they work here in the USA.

Verizon: UMW190

Pros: Best USA 3G coverage, same International GSM coverage as AT&T and T-Mobile.

Cons: Highest cost for USB card itself

AT&T: Velocity USB

Pros: Free USB card and plan includes Free AT&T Wifi Hotspot usage

Cons: Not nearly as good of USA coverage as Verizon, and slower than T-Mobile

T-Mobile: Rocket USB

Pros: Free USB card, Fastest Card in USA (within HSPA+ coverage) and $10 less per month. Also includes free T-Mobile Hotspot usage

Cons: Limited USA coverage. Good in cities, poor rural coverage.

The Sprint 4G U1901 is a new Sprint USB device, but personally, I don't think its a very good choice for most people.

The reason for my hesitation with this Sprint Mobile Broadband device? It is a 4G only device which means it will only work in limited areas in comparison to the much larger 3G coverage areas. There is one advantage to a 4G only device, and that is that it is only $49.99 a month versus the normal $59.99 for a dual band 3G and 4G device. However, the U1901 only makes sense if you already get 4G in your city and you only need it there, as it won't work AT ALL in a 3G area. And even if it suits your Mobile Internet needs now, you are out of luck if your needs change down the road. Until 4G is much more popular, I would recommend a 3G and 4G device like the Sprint 250U, which by the way is on my list of the Best Mobile Broadband Cards.

For a small segment of people the U1901 will be a great choice, just don't be one of the people who make a huge mistake by not being aware of the limitations of this device!

Road Trip Time! How to keep everyone connected to the Internet

Summer road trip time is about over, but there is still time for one more trip! What a great way to connect with the family and share fantastic memories. However, on especially long road trips, it can be nice to give the kids something to do, and the adults a way to get a little work done if needed. It can also come in handy to hop on the internet, which usually has better directions than Aunt Millie. It’s also nice to be able to do some research on where to go and what to do on the road, rather than wasting an hour once you get to your destination. So how can you connect to the internet while traveling down the interstate at 75mph?

Equipment Options

If it is just one or two travelers, then all you will need is a standard USB card from Verizon(Free USB760) or Sprint (Free 250U) that you can plug into any laptop. Verizon generally has the most rural 3G coverage, but Sprint is a good choice too. Just check the coverage maps first to make sure which one covers you the best.

If you have a whole gaggle of kids, or all the inlaws packed into the family minivan or RV your needs will be much different. For this I suggest a Sprint Overdrive or a Verizon MiFi 2200 which both create a “mobile hotspot”. This allows up to 5 WiFi connections at once, so Johnny can use his iPod Touch, Jill can play with her PSP, the wife can make sure you are not lost with GPS with the iPad, and Aunt Millie can finally learn what Google is on the netbook. And yes Aunt Millie, it works just as well going 75mph as it does in the parking lot.

3G Mobile Broadband Coverage Video

There are several tools to help check what kind of signal any location is going to get . To start, go to coverage maps on our site to determine if there is 3G mobile internet coverage at that specific address.

The maps will tell you if there is 3G Mobile Broadband Internet service in that area, but not any specific info on how strong that signal is. For this, a common tool we can use is your cell phone. You need to have the same carrier for this info to do you any good. If you want to check for Verizon Internet coverage, you would need a Verizon cell phone.

For the next step, just look at your signal on the phone to see the bars. However, this is sometimes not detailed enough info. Most phones will have a way to find the dBm level or RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) On a Blackberry for example, go to Options, then Status.

The Signal is the first item, and it will give you a numerical reading that is more accurate that just signal bars. The lower the number the better. 60’s and 70’s are great, 80’s are ok, the 90s are getting poor and anything over 100 is usually going to have fairly poor, bad service, or no service without the help of an Antenna or Amplifier.

How to Improve Aircard Signal Using an MBR1000 Mobile Broadband Router. Is it possible for a CradlePoint MBR1000 to improve the signal on your Verizon (or AT&T or Sprint) aircard without any Antennas or Amplifiers?

Yes, it is. We have a few tricks that can help you get the best signal possible. First of all, you need to know how to see the signal. On the MBR1000, simply press down the Signal button for about 5 seconds until the green light comes on. Now you can see how many bars of signal you are getting.

For an even more accurate way to see the signal strength, log into the Cradlepoint Administration page and select “Modem”. This will give you the dBm or RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) in a number between about 60 to 110+. Lower is better! A signal of 75 is better than 95.

Now that you know how to determine the best signal area in your particular home/office, you can place the CradlePoint in the best area in the building. For example, if you get a RSSI of 72 dBm in the upstairs bedroom, but only a 86 dBm in the office on the first floor, you can still put the router and USB card in the better upstairs location and then let the MBR1000 send the wifi signal down to the office where the computers are located.

So yes, a Cradlepoint router CAN help get you a better signal by virtue of letting you put it in a more advantageous place, especially with the great range of the MBR1000.

How to find the default password for the Cradlepoint MBR1000 mobile router. One of the most frequently asked questions when someone is setting up a new Cradlepoint MBR1000 router is, “What is the Password?”

First of all, let's get you to that point by typing 192.168.0.1 into your browser window after you have found your CradlePoint’s wireless signal on your computer.

Once you type that in and press enter, you will be prompted for the Admin Password. It is listed on the outside of your box, or even better, it is located on the bottom of your router. Just turn the MBR1000 over and find the MAC address. Then take the last 6 digits of the MAC address and type them into the password field in all lower case.

That is it! Now you can get into the Cradlepoint MBR1000 Administration pages to set up security or any other tasks or changes to customize your router settings.

Cradlepoint MBR1000 Mobile Broadband Router with Failover. Do you need your Internet to be up and running 24/7? If you require always-on Internet service, then you need failover. Failover lets you use 2 or more Internet sources, one primary source, and one or more as backups in case the main Internet service goes down.

If your primary Internet source is Cable or DSL, then you can set the router to use an aircard like the Verizon USB760 as a secondary Internet source. If the main Internet service stops working, the MBR1000 will failover to the aircard with no interruption in service. If your primary Internet source is a Verizon aicard, you can use another Verizon aircard as your backup or you can even use another carrier like AT&T giving you even more protection.

Upgrading to this firmware release will cause a factory reset from previous firmware. New features added in this release:

OpenDNS support on Sprint network under Advanced -> Web Filter. Some carrier's DNS servers intercept requests to other DNS services. This change provides a workaround to allow the use of the router's Advanced -> Web Filter -> OpenDNS content filtering functionality or your personal OpenDNS account settings.
Bounce page billboard. We added the ability to customize the "authorize_client.html" page, which is the page someone first sees when trying to access the Internet using the router. The default code used for our page is available as an example. CradlePoint Support will not provide help writing HTML, if you aren't comfortable with HTML this isn't the feature for you. Under Tools -> User Login -> Customize Billboard are two buttons and a checkbox.

Rural Internet? Is it really that hard to get Internet?

Lately I have read plenty of articles of small town rural areas that have residents and local officials complaining that they are left behind in the digital age. The great digital divide. There is of course Obama's Broadband Roadmap article as well which never mentions some very viable options that are already available. Granted, there certainly are areas that have limited options as compared to a metro area. However when it comes to rural Internet, most people would be surprised to learn that most areas already have High Speed Mobile Broadband from Sprint or Verizon. No, most don't need Cable or DSL to get Broadband! I invite any rural readers to check your actual street coverage especially on Verizon who has lots of rural broadband coverage. There are even amplifiers and antennas that allow you to get service outside the actual coverage areas!

Another misconception is that Mobile Broadband is only for laptops. Not true! Small offices and homes with 2 to 5 computers can easily share one Sprint or Verizon aircard, along with a Mobile Router, to create a wireless network just like with Cable or DSL.

Is Mobile Broadband a little more expensive that some other options? Yes, at $59.99 a month it is a bit more...but don't forget it also works anywhere in the USA compared to just one location with Cable or DSL, so you are getting more actual service as well. Hopefully people will start to realize that Mobile Broadband is a real option. It has been my only connection to the web for over 3 years!

CradlePoint has released firmware version 1.4.2 for the MBR1000 & CTR500 3G EVDO mobile routers. The new firmware adds compatibility for the Verizon Novatel USB760 and the Blackberry Storm 9530.

Also included in this release:

OpenDNS support on Sprint network. Sprint DNS servers intercept requests to other DNS services. This change provides a workaround to allow the use of the router's Advanced -> Web Filter -> OpenDNS content filtering functionality. If you have your own OpenDNS account settings, this will not make them work for you. That functionality is expected in our 1.5 release. This does not affect Verizon or AT&T networks.

Note that a defect exists with load balancing and using a Sprint modem along with a modem from a different carrier. Content may or may not be blocked depending on which modem the request is made through (Sprint with workaround vs. other carrier without workaround). If only Sprint modems are used for load balancing, this issue does not occur.

Speed test comparisons are great if you have coverage. Without coverage, speed doesn’t matter. So, which carrier has the best 3G mobile broadband coverage; Sprint, Verizon or AT&T? Well, that really depends on where you’re going to use it. While all 3 carriers have excellent 3G broadband coverage in some of the larger cities such as New York and Chicago, the coverage isn’t as equitable for the rest of the country. Looking at the coverage maps on the web sites for Sprint, Verizon and AT&T it appears that AT&T has the smallest 3G broadband network. There doesn’t seem to be many areas that AT&T covers that aren’t also covered by Sprint and/or Verizon.

For people who are mobile and need to have Internet access in more than one geographic area, it’s important to choose a carrier with the best broadband coverage for those areas. For instance, if I live in Phoenix, AZ both Verizon and Sprint have excellent coverage, but if I also need Internet access in Kansas, Sprint is going to be my best choice. If I need Inernet access in Georgia, Verizon is the best choice. Now, just looking at the map isn’t the best way to find 3G mobile broadband coverage. Within any geographic area with coverage, there are pockets that either don’t have coverage or have poor coverage. The best way to find 3G mobile broadband coverage for your area is to look up your address on the coverage map. Try different carriers and see which one has the best coverage for the areas you need Internet access.

Verizon Wireless Expands 3G Network in South Boston
Investing to Stay Ahead of Growing Demand for Wireless Voice, Multimedia and Internet Access
SOUTH BOSTON, MA — In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Suffolk County, Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site. The new site increases wireless voice and data coverage and capacity along East Broadway and L Street in South Boston, Mass., as well as the surrounding area.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $48 billion since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST. Regionally the company has invested over $2.2 billion into its New England network, including over $100 million during the first six months of 2008. As the wireless carrier with America's largest 3G network, every Verizon Wireless cell site in New England provides wireless broadband connectivity.

BroadbandAccess offers computer users the nation's most reliable high-speed wireless mobile broadband network, operating at average upload speeds between 500 and 800 kilobits per second (kbps), and download speeds between 600 kbps and 1.4 megabits per second over Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess with Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) network. V CAST brings video clips of TV shows, music on demand and other multimedia services to wireless phones.

The company’s “nation’s most reliable wireless network” reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. Nationally, these test men and women drive 90 specially equipped vehicles almost 1 million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts, to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3 million voice call attempts and more than 16 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

Novatel MiFi Creates 3G Portable Hotspot
Novatel Wireless Inc. announced today that they have created an unprecedented line of Intelligent Mobile Hotspots. MiFi represents the industry's first Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, a new category of mobile broadband that lets users put their world of content, services and connectivity in their pocket. The MiFi line of products should be available during the first quarter of 2009 and sources estimate the price will be just under $200 before any discounts offered by carriers such as Sprint and Verizon. This is great news for people who need to share their Internet connection. However, if you only need Internet for one computer, a mobile broadband card is still your best option.

New Smaller Verizon USB760 now available for just $49.99 at More Mobile Internet.

This is the latest Novatel USB card for Verizon. It is slightly shorter than the previous USB727 and offers an 8GB memory slot vs. the 4GB slot our Free USB727 had. IF the size difference is a big deal for you, and you don't need to use it with a Mobile Router, then the USB760 is a good choice. However, since the size difference is not that great, and the card has the same speed as the older device we don't really see a huge advantage to the newer device. Especially since the USB760 does not work with any of the mobile routers...yet. Either way, More Mobile Internet saves you $50 over the Verizon price, and offers even better deals with the purchase of a Mobile Router.
